"They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy. What a bunch of a-holes."
My reaction when I first watched the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer? Boom!! I have to watch this movie!! The trailer looks very fun, especially with the presence of strange creatures such as raccoons and tree people. This film is based on one of Marvel's best selling comics, I myself have never heard of this comic before. Understandably, I'm not a comic lover, hehe... Luckily I was able to watch this film in Malaysia two weeks earlier than when it was broadcast in Indonesia on August 20. Andddd..I loved it! It was a super fun experience in the cinema. There are many scenes that are guaranteed to make the audience laugh ridiculously, balanced with action scenes that are no less exciting. One thing that stands out about this film is the presence of nostalgic songs which of course makes this film more unique compared to the superhero films that have recently appeared in cinemas. You can even find a dancing scene here! Music and dance in a superhero movie? HELL YEAH.
A boy is kidnapped from Earth in a space ship and taken to a distant planet. He then grew into a young man whose job was as a 'scavenger' and called himself Star Lord (Chris Pratt). His daily activity is to travel around in his space ship and become objects that he can steal and sell. One day he found a ball and from then on he was chased by many parties until finally he was thrown into prison and met people who would later become his colleagues. They are a raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper), sidekick Rocket who is a tree man named Groot (Vin Diesel), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Batista), and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) who is a murderer. The five of them then work together to escape from prison and plan to secure the ball which turns out to be very dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands. The adventure begins and they call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy!
The plot of this film is actually not that special. A group of people are forced to join into a team and at first they don't like each other but over time they become solid. It's a cliché and it's easy to guess what the ending will be like. However, from the trailer alone, we can actually see that Guardians of the Galaxy is not serious and wants to be a light and silly superhero film. The storyline is not too complicated and can certainly be enjoyed by most viewers. With a simple plot formula, Marvel has succeeded in presenting a super fun spectacle and fans will of course be waiting for the sequel soon.
For me the characters make this film. Each character has a different personality and it is easy for the audience to like all of them. You can easily relate to these characters. First, there is Star Lord, played by Chris Pratt. It seems like Chris Pratt is slowly but surely becoming my favorite future actor. He can easily play silly characters with natural humor but can also suddenly become serious and provide fierce action. The character of Star Lord himself seems to be somewhat similar to the character of Han Solo, who is imperfect and a little naughty, but the audience still likes him. Thumbs up to Chris Pratt who managed to lose around 36kg for this film! But my favorite character is Rocket!!! He is a total badass and Bradley Cooper did a great job providing the voice. He is quick witted, crazy with gun, and is a lot of fun to watch! I mean, who doesn't love a talking raccoon who swears and carries a loaded gun? Groot's character, who only speaks one sentence, is also guaranteed to have a place in the hearts of the audience. "I am Groot". Likewise with Gamora and Drax.
In essence, this is a very exciting superhero film. It made me laugh and I got emotionally connected to the characters. The characters in this film are the main selling point, Chris Pratt and his friends made this film a huge success. They are all different, full of personality, and the audience is made to really relate to the characters throughout the film. Every characters steals the show! Pretty sure this movie is going to be one of the most entertaining movie this year! Thank you Marvel Studios. :)
