REVIEW: THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

"Okay? Okay."

When talking about the book by John Green entitled The Fault in Our Stars, there is so much that I like in this book. There are so many elements, dialogues and moments that touch the reader's heart. It is not surprising that this book became a best seller and managed to gather many fans from all over the world. Seriously, no spoiler but this book brought me to tears. When I heard that this book would be made into a film, of course I was happy, but to be honest, I didn't have high expectations. There have been so many best-selling books that have been made into films, but the results usually tend to be more favorable 'disaster'. For example, the best-selling youth novel Twilight, which I think is a very good book, however all the movies are crap not good. However, there are also examples that exceed the limits of my expectations from novels that are made into films, it is one of my favourite book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The film, which was also directed by the novelist himself, Stephen Chbosky, apparently proves that it is possible to make a novel into a film with good execution without losing the essence of the novel. One of the main keys in turning a novel into a film is casting, The Fault in Our Stars is considered successful in this regard.

Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) is dying. Thyroid cancer. He cannot let go of the oxygen cylinder he carries everywhere and the cannula which is always attached to his nostrils to help channel air into his lungs to help him breathe like a human. 'health'. His father and mother are very supportive, especially her mother, who seems to not care about herself anymore and dedicates her time to looking after Hazel. For a 16 year old teenager, Hazel is quite intelligent. He enjoys reading and has one favorite book that he has read many times by Peter Van Houten (Willem Dafoe). Hazel has suffered from cancer since childhood, perhaps this is what makes her a bit cynical in looking at life, you could say she tends to be more pessimistic. He just lives monotonously day after day and has no spirit to enjoy life anymore.

However, when her mother forced her to join a support group specifically for teenagers with cancer, Hazel didn't realize that her way of looking at life would change. He, who had been forced to join this community just because he didn't want to disappoint his mother, finally became enthusiastic after he met Augustus Walter. (Ansel Elgort). From the moment we met Gus, he had been flirting with Hazel, who he thought was very beautiful. They quickly became friends and of course...fell in love. Adventures are of course ahead of them, one of which is a trip to Amsterdam to meet Hazel's favorite writer, Peter Van Houten. As time passes, couples who meet in the cancer community certainly realize that they may not have long to be together and must be prepared if one of them has to leave each other.

In terms of story, to be honest, this is very predictable. However, this was different when I read the book, I had no idea that the ending would be like this. Perhaps the execution in the film was not easy because there are many details in the book that are not presented in the film. Or maybe it's because I've read the book, so I already know the storyline and ending, so I didn't seem too surprised when I got to the ending. I didn't even cry while watching, but of course I heard the women in the back row, left and right, shed tears together. However, in terms of films based on best-selling novels, I think The Fault in Our Stars is the least film 'disaster'. I really like the soundtrack in this film, kudos to that! You can hear Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg, Grouplove, Birdy, Kodaline, Tom Odell, Lykke Li, M83, and many more.

The chemistry between Shailene and Ansel deserves two thumbs up. It's actually a bit strange to see them here as a couple after previously being brothers in Divergent (2014). In my opinion, Ansel's acting in the film is a bit theatrical, but what I imagined when reading the book matched the character that Ansel presented, great choice! Likewise with Shailene who plays Hazel, the character really suits her. Oh and Nat Wolff as Isaac! As I said at the beginning, cast is very important in adapting a novel and I think Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort are the right choice in this case. So is The Fault in Our Stars an extraordinary film and will it enter the ranks of best romantic films in the future? Nope. There are many strange things and to be honest, this is not a perfect film, but the question is, is this film enjoyable? Yes. I enjoyed watching this movie and I'm sure many people were touched by watching this film. Not a bad movie at all. :)
